In Women of Immokalee, Lisette Morales showcases remarkable women from Immokalee, FL, whose impacts among their communities have created change. Women of Immokalee honors women who are known and celebrated by their community members, but whose realities are often not recognized outside of the small rural community.
Lisette Morales realized years ago that women, in particular, were not being represented in front of or behind the lens. We must see their ambitions, struggles, and dreams from the lens of another woman to truly understand their realities. Lisette's collection explores the complexities of being a woman leading change in her beloved community.

Artist Statement
As a Latina and Indigenous I’m honored that I had the opportunity to photograph these extraordinary women and listen to their stories. I was fortunate that I worked in Immokalee for a while which allowed me to get to know the area, create friendships, and enjoy the delicious food. Though I’m not from Immokalee, and I don’t live there, I consider the place my second home. I’m grateful for this online exhibition because there are still few women of color behind the lens. Here we’re presenting you with images of women on both sides of the lens. I’m grateful to Vicki Silvera and Rhia Rae of FIU, Maria Plata of Roots of Immokalee, Cesar Alejandro Becerra who championed this project for three years, my children Lulu and Mars, and my partner Sean McCabe.

Como latina e indígena, me siento honrada de haber tenido la oportunidad de fotografiar a estas mujeres extraordinarias y escuchar sus historias. Tuve la suerte de trabajar en Immokalee durante un tiempo, lo que me permitió conocer la zona, hacer amistades y disfrutar de la deliciosa comida. Aunque no soy de Immokalee y no vivo allí, considero el lugar como mi segundo hogar. Estoy agradecida por esta exhibición en línea porque todavía hay pocas mujeres de color detrás de la lente.
