Straight Collection Card Catalog Available Online

The card catalog from the William Straight Collection is now available online.

In 2009, the Special Collections department at Florida International University Libraries received a donation from the family of Dr. William Straight facilitated by Dr. Christine Ardalan. The collection includes his research on medical history throughout the state of Florida; unique and interesting memorabilia, and ephemera relating to medicine and Florida history.

Dr. Straight was a Miami resident and a practicing cardiologist for over 40 years. He also researched and wrote articles about Florida history for the scholarly journal, Tequesta, published by the Historical Association of Southern Florida (HistoryMiami).

Recently, the William Straight Collection’s card catalog has been made available online. The card catalog contains the personal research of Dr. Straight and is the result of years of comprehensive research including biographical and historical information on individuals, organizations, various medical societies, epidemics, military medicine, relating to Florida doctors, history and medicine. The collection also includes an extensive history of the first doctors in Miami beginning in the late 1800’s.

The online collection mimics the original organizational structure of the card catalog created by Dr. Straight and is arranged by research topics. It is available for full text search at http://dpanther.fiu.edu/dpanther/collections/WSCOur intention is that the online card catalog will complement the William Straight Collection Finding Aid and expand access to other research areas of the collection.
